![]() And it helps differentiate The Amazing Spider-Man from previous movies that Gwen Stacy ( Emma Stone), not Mary Jane Watson, is Peter/Spidey's love interest here. He's antsy and curious and very charming. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ended on somewhat of a cliffhanger, with Harry Osborn apparently gearing up to form the Sinister Six and take down Spidey, beginning with Rhino. After Peter Parker is bitten by a genetically altered spider, he gains newfound, spider-like powers and ventures out to save the city from the machinations of a mysterious reptilian foe. Garfield brings a different but equally fantastic energy to the role his Peter has a skater-on-the-fringes angst that's not emo and not super-boyish (like Maguire) but still perfect for a teenage superhero. The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) PG-13 136 min Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi. So is there any reason to love this new outing, which treads over much of the same backstory as previous films did? Well, yes. Sure, the third film of the last set, which featured the wonderful Tobey Maguire in the titular role, was a bit disappointing, but overall the series was a crowd-pleaser in many ways. ![]() Let's be honest, though: The Spider-Man franchise didn't really need a reboot. This Spidey wants to show off, as a teen encountering new powers would, and he deserved a proper fight. One gripe worth airing is about Spider-Man's nemesis: The Lizard seems scary enough, but not so scary as to be a worthy opponent. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a computer game that can be downloaded easily. The movie is partly based on the same-named 2014 film. Beenox developed the game, which was released by Activision. It is a Marvel Comics Spider-Man adventure video game. He lingers on the teen romance, which is delightful, and serves up thrilling action sequences without the show-off-y quality that too many superhero movies rely on. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man 2012. Would a superhero really break his promise?ĭirector Marc Webb brings a realism to the proceedings that's hard not to like in this superhero reboot. ![]() It was incongruous to find this in such a black-and-white movie. A teenage Peter Parker grapples with both high school and amazing super-human crises as his alter-ego Spider-Man. I understand that he said this to let Gwen know that he is going to stay in her life however, if he's going to break the promise to her dying father there should have been some screen time devoted to how he thought that through or arrived at that conclusion. ![]() I was also tremendously bothered about the last line: the best promises are the ones you don't keep. I think all of us should show respect to the hard-working police officers that keep our communities safe, and I don't appreciate them being portrayed as buffoons. There are a couple of things that I will bring up with them in the days to come, though: I was bothered that Peter dissed the police officer when he was caught webbing up a car thief. There wasn't much that my children wanted to talk about afterwards. Being thrifty, though, I didn't get enough out of it to merit the money. My children (15, 14, 12) LOVED the movie. Garfield, most certainly, is one of them.I found the movie cheesy at times, but of course Martin Sheen and Sally Fields brought their skills to the screen in a way that made the movie interesting for me. So how moving, then, was his big return? He's only in No Way Home for fifteen minutes of screentime, tops, and yet he steals the show, embodying the charm and inviting vulnerability that bowled us over in the first place. I found that really, really tricky,” he said, ever the artist. “I was still young enough to struggle with the value system, I suppose, of corporate America. It was in the same interview that Garfield spoke to how difficult his Spiderman experience was, being just 27 when he was cast. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 might've been a critical dud, but there's no one Spiderman sequence that screams “excelsior!” more than its prologue, Garfield dipping-and-diving, hitting bad guys with webs, fists and biting rejoinders, just quaking with comic book pizzazz. And that should be a prerequisite, really, of a teenage crusader who embodies, more than anything, the pure fun and enjoyment of slinging around the New York skyline. ![]() It's as if you're witnessing his boyhood dream playing out in real-time: indeed, in an interview back in 2016, he spoke to how he's dressed up as the superhero since he was three years old. But Garfield is the only Spidey who always feels, in every scene you watch, excited to be him. ![]()
